This unit pretty much paid for itself the 1st day I had it. I've had a bin of dull drill bits that I have accumulated over the years that I was able to quickly and easily sharpen to as good as new condition in a few hours. There is also the convenience factor. Seemed like every time I need a bit to drill through steel plate I would have to run to a store and buy one as all of mine were dull. With 3 adult sons using them it is hard to keep track of when one goes dull. Now I can pop it in this device and have a like new bit in a few short minutes. Would not hesitate to buy again and only sorry I waited so long to get this.

Arrived this afternoon and I just spent a couple hours getting to know the machine and sharpening a couple dozen of my 50 year accumulation of dulled drill bits. Fortunately I never threw many of them out. The drill doctor works quickly and restores them to near new condition- some are even better than new. Even split points come out OK if you are careful. This is one of those tools you put off buying knowing in the long run you are wasting time and money not owning one. Sure enough, I can see right away this is going to save hours of frustration and trips to the store. A nice touch would be if they included a magnifier in the package.

I do 99% metal fab but I have found that 118* tips with the bit all the way over in the + side when you align the bit works best. I did a bunch of bits at 118* with the alignment in the middle position and they didn't seem to drill that great on steel. After aligning the bit all the way to the left + side, the bits really bite in and work great! Be prepared to sharpen, reset alignment, sharpen, reset alignment, sharpen, reset alignment on new bits so the whole face gets sharpened. A sharpie marker coloring the face shows you what has been grinded and what hasn't.

I have spent the last couple night sharpening all my old bits and love this thing. Really does a good job! The only thing is its a bit noisy and the black plastic part you fit the chuck into for sharpening has loosened a bit and rattles when its running and no chuck is in it (like when your splitting points).

This is for a home user. It takes dull bits and makes them useful again. I practiced on a very beat up bit and found it was very easy to set up and use. Written instructions were excellent. I bought the this sharpener for larger bits. I had an expensive specialty 17/32” bit that was hard to find. I was struggling with drilling a hole in 1/2” plate because it was dulled. I sharpened the bit with this drill doctor and was able to easily drill my hole. Some other poster complained it was not precise enough for him. How precise do you have to be to drill a hole for a home user?

I used this tool extensively for the first time this evening. It performed flawlessly and produced excellent results. The how-to videos could were a little ambiguous on a couple details, but I quickly figured them out. The quality of the product is good and I found its use intuitive. There were a couple deficiencies that I observed during usage. First, the shaving tray is poorly designed. It was difficult to remove and reinstall, not to mention it is very thin, cheap plastic which I will almost certainly break at some point. Secondly, the tray doesn't collect anything really, the material is ejected from the split point port. I found this out the hard way after sharpening a half dozen bits on my dinette table; the wife was not happy. Overall, I still give this product 5 stars as it greatly simplifies bit sharpening and produces consistent results every time.

I will say that it does require learning how to use it properly. Setting up the actual drill bit for the first time may be a little confusing if you've never used one before. You definitely need to position the drill bits accurately and use the tool correctly to get the grind just right. It took me a few trial runs on some old bits before I got the correct rhythm. Not to say that the instructions aren't detailed because they are abundantly so, perhaps to a fault. I am just more visual so I watched a couple of Youtube videos to figure it out. Once I did I was delighted with how sharp the bits were.

I would definitely recommend getting a this sharpener, especially to keep your larger and more expensive drill bits sharp. The this sharpener allows you to sharpen a wider variety of bits and gives you far more flexibility in angle grinds than you get with the 500 or lesser Drill Doctor sharpeners and so it is definitely worth spending the extra money. You'll be happy that you did.
